Rubbery rot
Geotrichum candidum
Symptoms
- Rotten, rubbery tubers
- Rot develops from the outside to the inside of tubers
- Sour smell
- Pink colouration after exposure to the air
- Symptoms are similar to pink rot
- Fungal growth resembles white sugar
- Infection can allow bacterial wet rot to develop
Infection and spread
- Found in most soils
- Geotrichum candidum affects the eyes of seed tubers, resulting in less stems at emergence
- Mainly occurs when tubers are sat in wet, cold soil
Possible confusion with
- Pink rot (Phytophthora erythroseptica)
