Verticillium wilt
Verticillium dahliae
Symptoms
- Early senescence
- First yellowing seen on one side of the leaf
- Later symptoms include wilting and necrosis
- Brown-yellow to gold colouring of the vascular bundle at the stem base is very typical
- Stems ultimately also turn blue
Infection and spread
- Survives in the soil for a long period as microsclerotia
- Verticillium has many host plants
- The presence of potato cyst, root knot or root lesion nematodes favour an early and heavier infection
- Stress increases infection: heat, drought, water logging and insufficient nitrogen
Possible confusion with
- Dry rot (Fusarium spp.) (laboratory test needed to determine difference)
- Black dot (Colletotrichum coccodes)
- Gangrene (Phoma foveata)
